The Columbia River Basin Land Stewardship Status coverage depicts land protection status for all lands in the US portion of the Columbia River Basin. The coverage was compiled from individual GAP state projects' land stewardship data. The attribute coding system is consistent with that developed by GAP. The data is 1:100,000 scale and includes portions of ID, MT, NV, OR, UT, WA ,WY.
Purpose:
Created for the Subbasin Planning portion of the Northwest Power Planning Council's (NWPPC) Fish and Wildlife 2000 program.

An area having permanent protection from conversion of natural land cover and a mandated management plan in operation to maintain a natural state within which disturbance events (of natural type, frequency, intensity, and legacy) are allowed to proceed without interference or are mimicked through management.
An area having permanent protection from conversion of natural land cover and a mandated management plan in operation to maintain a primarily natural state, but which may receive uses or management practices that degrade the quality of existing natural communities, including suppression of natural disturbance.
An area having permanent protection from conversion of natural land cover for the majority of the area, but subject to extractive uses of either a broad, low-intensity type (e.g., logging) or localized intense type (e.g., mining). It also confers protection to federally listed endangered and threatened species throughout the area.
There are no known public or private institutional mandates or legally recognized easements or deed restrictions held by the managing entity to prevent conversion of natural habitat types to anthropogenic habitat types. The area generally allows conversion to unnatural land cover throughout.

The original GAP datasets did not align along state boundaries, and additionally, the polygons were not edgematched. To join these datasets, all coverages were projected to the current Albers projection. Next, all coverages were edited so that each contained only the item PROTSTAT, and polygon topology was verified and corrected as necessary. The coverages were then appended and topology rebuilt with the ArcInfo Clean command. Newly created polygons along state boundaries with a PROTSTAT value of 0 were then Eliminated since they were artifacts of the state boundaries misalignment. The coverage was then dissolved on PROTSTAT to delete the boundaries between like attributed polygons across state borders. The item CLASS was subsequently added and the coverage was clipped to the US Columbia River Basin boundary.
