Abstract:
This data set contains mapped White Oak and Ponderosa Pine stands within the Willamette Valley of Oregon that were collected using field inventory techniques and NAIP aerial imagery with a 1 meter pixel resolution. Field mapping, from May 2000 to October 2006, was used to classify areas accessible and/or visible from public roads. The coverage incorporates the selected strata classifications for vegetation type, structural conditions, size, and canopy.
Purpose:
This data was created by the Northwest Habitat Institute for the BLM, USDA Forest Service, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Willamette Valley Oak Conservation Project.

Digital data from two quads around the Corvallis area was found to be corrupt during the GIS final analysis after the field season. These quads will be mapped for oak by NHI in spring of 2007, as soon as leaf cover permits.

43 USGS quads are fully completed spanning from just south of Portland to south of Eugene. There is potential to map oak in approxiamately 16 more quads around the Portland metro area to technically complete the valley.

Used as base map for project. All polygons were digitized on-screen using ArcPad 7.0 on a Trimble GeoXT with orthophotos (combined with 1998 Landsat TM data) displayed in background. These quadrangles aerial phots were from various, unknown years and field research indicated that significant land cover changes had occurred since the orthophotos were created.
